In 2027 Kozloduy NPP Unit 5 will switch entirely to fuel by Westinghouse

In 2027, Kozloduy NPP Unit 5 will be completely fuelled with fuel by Westinghouse. This was announced by the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Tsanko Bachiyski. At the moment, the process of introducing the new fuel is going smoothly with the loaded test batch, reporter Natalia Ganchovska informed.

In 2028, it will be finally clear whether there are problems with this fuel, whether its use will continue, or whether some other measures will have to be taken, Bachiyski said. On May 9, the unit will be shut down for a planned annual overhaul, during which another batch of the new American fuel will be loaded. The four-year process of a phased transition to the new nuclear fuel began in 2024. Until then, the Bulgarian NPP operated entirely with Russian fuel.
