“We celebrate rights that have been fought for over generations. But today, the right to decent work and fair income, justice, and social security are being put to the test – not only in Bulgaria, but globally”, President Iliana Iotova said in a Facebook post on the occasion of May 1 - International Workers’ Day.

“It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, in European Bulgaria, the category of ‘working poor’ still exists. Their high number is shameful”, Bulgaria’s the head of state added.

“Bold and competent politicians are needed who, not only in words but through actions, will ensure that people of honest labour, people with abilities, ambition, and talent are not suffocated by deprivation and crushed self-esteem. On the contrary, their creative potential should be encouraged. It is part of the Bulgarian people’s DNA”, President Iotova said in her message for May 1.
