In the first days of May, the Regional Ethnographic Open-Air Museum Etar presents a rich festive programme dedicated to St. George’s Day—one of Bulgaria’s most significant spring holidays, associated with the agricultural cycle, livestock breeding, and the veneration of St. George. In the days leading up to May 6, visitors will be immersed in the atmosphere of traditional Bulgarian life through craft demonstrations, culinary presentations, and reenactments of customs.

The programme also includes interactive activities and the opportunity to sample traditional dishes prepared on site using old recipes.

The programme places particular emphasis on educational initiatives for children and families. The Children’s Centre is hosting thematic workshops that present traditional clothing-making techniques and the role of natural materials in the past.

Visitors will be able to watch authentic crafts in action—from grain milling in a water mill to demonstrations of pastoral life in a traditional Balkan dairy. The celebrations will culminate on May 6 with choral church chants, festive marches, and a special exhibition dedicated to Bulgarian military uniforms titled “The Evolution of the Bulgarian Military Uniform 1876–1944.”

The event at the Regional Ethnographic Open-Air Museum Etar presents the richness of Bulgarian traditions in an accessible way and their preservation today as part of European cultural heritage.
