Bulgaria is urging faster progress on the construction of Corridor 8, President Iliana Iotova said, highlighting the project’s importance for regional connectivity and security.

Speaking at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, she said that connectivity was key to shared security, covering everything from economic development to defence. She added that Bulgaria was keen to play an active role in advancing these efforts.

“National projects must find their place within our shared geographic and economic connectivity,” she said, describing south-eastern Europe as a strategic bridge between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

She said that Bulgaria was calling for Corridor 8 to be accelerated, as this would link Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Albania, effectively connecting the Adriatic and Black Seas.

She added that such projects were crucial for the integration of the Western Balkans and would strengthen transport links across Europe. Iotova also emphasised the importance of the Trans-Caspian transport corridor in improving connectivity between Europe and Asia.
