Following “Progressive Bulgaria’s” victory in the 19 April early elections, many international commentators began drawing comparisons between Rumen Radev and the embattled Hungarian leader, Viktor Orbán. During consultations with President Iliana Yotova, Petar Vitanov, chairman of the "Progressive Bulgaria" parliamentary group, assured that Bulgaria’s foreign policy would not change.

“For nine years, Rumen Radev has held very clear positions that are shared by almost all European leaders,” Vitanov said.

He noted that there were several reasons why it was necessary to send this message.

First, there are hegemonic projects in the Balkans that use aggression against neighbouring countries to hinder European integration in the Western Balkans, and their leaders immediately played the “Bulgarian Orbán” card.

Second, amid a period of profound global transformation, Bulgaria’s partners need to know that they will have a reliable, predictable and loyal ally in the new government, Vitanov was quoted as saying by the BGNES news agency.
