The blessing of the battle flags and sacred banners in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Sofia began with a helicopter flying overhead bearing the national flag. The ceremony was held to mark Valour Day and Bulgarian Army Day on 6 May. The Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia, Daniil, performed the blessing.

Upon receiving the honour guard President Iliana Iotova stated:
"It is a great honour to stand before you on Valour Day and Bulgarian Army Day. May 6th carries special significance; it is a national holiday filled with Bulgarian pride."
The Head of State emphasised that today all Bulgarians honour history, because under these banners, and often at the cost of their lives, brave Bulgarian patriots fought for the freedom of their fatherland, for the sake us, their future descendants.

Addressing the Bulgarian army, the president said: "In these difficult and dangerous times, we are counting on you once again as warriors. The Bulgarian people love and hold our army in high esteem. Your actions prove that you are a worthy partner. We know that you will defend us at all costs. May St George the Victorious watch over and protect you! Long live Bulgaria! Happy holiday!"

"Due to operating under a provisional budget, we lack the funds to organise a large parade involving military equipment and personnel, so we have limited ourselves to blessing the battle flags," said Acting Minister of Defence Atanas Zapryanov.
He expressed hope that conditions would allow for a more extensive celebration of the holiday next year.
