Eighty-five percent of motorists cite poor infrastructure as the main cause of traffic accidents in the country, while 73% point to inadequate enforcement, according to a national survey on attitudes toward cars presented by the Association of Car Manufacturers (ACM).

Alexander Kostadinov, chairman of the Association, said that Bulgaria ranks among the countries with the highest rates of traffic fatalities and urban air pollution.

The survey shows that people expect the state to provide better roads and stricter traffic enforcement. “We were surprised that 89% of respondents consider the air in our cities polluted. Some 72% are aware that air pollution leads to the premature deaths of tens of thousands of people and that urgent action is needed,” Kostadinov said.

ACM will urge the new government to adopt a national mobility strategy to address these issues.
