Bulgaria has secured three deals to build data centres, Tomislav Donchev of the GERB-SDS coalition said, quoted by the Bulgarian News Agency BTA. Mr Donchev made these comments while speaking at the “AI in Bulgaria: From Regulation to Real Applications and Impact” forum in Sofia. The event was organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Entrepreneurial Association (BESCO), in partnership with the Institute for Economic Policy and the German-Bulgarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Donchev announced that one memorandum had been signed with the German company Schwarz Digits, but did not name the other companies involved, except to say that they included another major German company and a very large US company.

According to Mr Donchev, two of the three projects are realistically achievable as “not all of them are competing with one another”. He also suggested that there could be a link between the Belene nuclear power plant project and future data centres, given the large amounts of electricity that such facilities consume.
