Media outlets are reacting to what unfolded last night, after Bulgaria’s DARA won the 70th annual Eurovision Song Contest in a nail-biting final that left Israel with its second consecutive second-place finish.
The Independent
In its article titled "Meet DARA, Bulgaria’s first ever Eurovision Song Contest champion", the newspaper writes "Already a pop star in her own country, Bulgarian singer DARA will surely now be able to claim national treasure status after winning Eurovision 2026 with her song “Bangaranga”.
The Telegraph
Dara’s mad banger gave Eurovision its bounce back. Only a nutty, maximalist electro dance number from Bulgaria could save the contest from itself.

The song’s infectious beats and tightly choreographed dance routine proved a hit with both national juries and viewers, whose votes together decide the winner.

Bulgarian pop star Dara has won the Eurovision Song Contest with her pneumatic dance anthem Bangaranga. Dara was far from a front-runner going into the contest, but her intricate choreography and naggingly catchy chorus helped her eclipse the competition - giving Bulgaria its first ever Eurovison title.

The self-deprecating humor of putting on a brilliantly staged piece of nonsense, despite having an outstanding voice. “Bangaranga” isn’t a silly or slapstick act. Dara is every bit as talented an artist as Sarah Engels. Yet somehow, she managed not to take herself too seriously and simply have fun on stage. I wish we in Germany would finally relax a little when it comes to Eurovision — giving artists more room for emotion and intuition. We have wonderful, incredibly talented performers in this country. If we let their creativity run free, maybe we’ll soon have our own Bangaranga moment.

Dara triumphed over 24 other finalists during the grand final, impressing both national juries and viewers with a high-energy performance and tightly choreographed routine. Although not considered among the pre-contest favourites, Dara gained momentum throughout Eurovision week.

Her track “Bangaranga,” a catchy club hit performed with slick choreography, was expected to do well but proved surprisingly popular with both the jury and the public vote, beating second-placed Israel in a tense final.
Ultimately, the 27-year-old enjoyed a truly decisive win, finishing 173 points ahead of Israel’s Noam Bettan – the biggest ever winning margin in the contest’s history.

Bulgaria triumphed on Saturday night at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, held under the shadow of controversy over the continued participation of Israel. The win by Dara was an upset. Her song, “Bangaranga,” is an upbeat dance-pop banger that features intense dancing and an infectious chorus.
The fever dream of a tune started dialed up to 11 and continued apace. It captivated the audience in the Wiener Stadthalle, receiving some of the loudest cheers.

The achievement surprised many because Bulgaria wasn't among the favorites to win in 2026. But with its catchy "Welcome to the riot!" refrain and bouncy vibe, performer Dara's banging anthem "Bangaranga" bested 24 other nations for the glittery global musical crown at the finals on Saturday in Vienna, Austria.
The Guardian
Described by its performer as “pop music with folklore bones”, Bangaranga is a pulsating party anthem inspired by kukeri – an ancient Bulgarian ritual where men roam through villages dressed in furry costumes with bells and animal masks.
The precise meaning of “bangaranga” became one of the running jokes of the night. Singer Dara said “bangaranga is a special energy that everyone has got in themselves, a feeling that everything is possible.”

The 27-year-old upset the odds to secure her country's first-ever victory at the Eurovision Song Contest, proving herself a winner once the votes came in from around the continent. She gained traction during Eurovision week with her intense and ultra-choreographed dancing on the catchy Bangaranga.

Dara was less kookily dressed, but her winning song had its own sense of spectacle. Little-known outside her home nation before Eurovision, she is a star in Bulgaria who started out participating in the country’s version of “The X Factor” talent show 10 years ago. Since releasing her debut single in 2016, DARA, whose real name is Darina Nikolaeva Yotova, has recorded two albums and has been a coach on Bulgaria’s version of another talent show, “The Voice.”

Bulgaria unexpectedly won the 70th Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Singer Dara secured a commanding victory over Israel with her party anthem “Bangaranga”. After a three-year absence, Bulgaria returned to Eurovision only this year. It is the Eastern European country’s first victory in the contest.

DARA beat 24 other competitors during Saturday’s grand final of the sequin-drenched pop music competition. “Bangaranga” is the sort of pop banger that Eurovision does so well, with its irresistible exhortation: “Surrender to the blinding lights. No one’s gonna sleep tonight. Welcome to the riot.”
Dara has spoken about battling with anxiety, and described bangaranga as an inner force that allows people to “drop this mask of chasing perfection."

Dara's success has given Bulgarian society a rare moment of unity in a fragmented country, stirring memories of 1994, when the national football team finished fourth in the World Cup.

Bulgaria made history by trouncing Israel and demonstrating the power of Eastern European countries. It was another nail-biting final.
On a night where the mystical traditions of the Balkans and cutting-edge pop music shattered all initial predictions, Bulgaria has been crowned European champion.
Darina Yotova, known artistically as Dara, was the one tasked with lifting the coveted crystal microphone. With her sweeping and hypnotic song “Bangaranga”, she achieved unanimous approval from the professional jury and massive global televoting.
Bulgaria's victory was a spectacular miracle that nearly turned into a disaster, as it wasn't until the final televote that Bulgaria was confirmed as the winning country. Israel received 123 points from the professional jury in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest final. Then, with 220 points from the public vote, Israel was in first place with a total of 343 points. However, when the public vote for Bulgaria came in, it swept the board with over 300 points — the highest score — overtaking Israel to give Bulgaria a total of 516 points. Last night, many in the offices of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the festival’s organiser, breathed a sigh of relief after several minutes of holding their breath, as if Israel had won, the crisis already present at Eurovision would have been magnified a hundredfold.
