Apriltsi marks 150 years since April Uprising

Commemorations marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising are taking place today in Apriltsi, which is also celebrating 50 years since it was officially declared a town. President and Commander-in-Chief Iliana Iotova is expected to attend the main ceremony at 8.30 pm local time at April Uprising Square in the Novo Selo district.

According to the presidency, Iliana Iotova will inspect the ceremonial formation of the National Guards Unit and the 14th student guards unit before delivering an address. The programme will conclude with a ceremonial military tattoo and roll call.

The event forms part of nationwide commemorations dedicated to the anniversary of the April Uprising, held under the patronage of the president. The commemorations in Apriltsi will continue until 24 May with a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of those killed in the Novoselsko uprising, an episode of the April Uprising, at the Cherven Pametnik site in the Zla Reka district.

The celebrations will culminate in a historical re-enactment of the battles at Debnevski Boaz involving members of the National Society “Tradition” and volunteers.
