Festive processions took place across Bulgaria as the country marked May 24, the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and of Slavic literature.
“Let us preserve the Bulgarian language, which makes us a nation, connects and unites us, and defines our national self-esteem,” President Iliana Yotova said during a ceremony outside the National Library Sts Cyril and Methodius.
Earlier, she joined a procession through central Sofia alongside Parliament Speaker Mihaela Dotsova, Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Daniil, Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev and others.

“Today nearly 300 million people around the world write using our letters. They use them to share their dreams, understand one another, express their love and pass on knowledge,” Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev said.
Representatives of kindergartens, schools, universities, cultural and scientific institutions also joined the traditional city procession in Varna, BNR correspondent Daniela Stoynova reported.
The citizens of Varna also marked the day of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

Processions also took place in Ruse, Stara Zagora and a number of other Bulgarian cities.
