Europe was too slow to push for negotiations with Russia and must urgently rethink its strategy toward the war in Ukraine, PM Rumen Radev said in Paris ahead of talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.

According to Radev, the pursuit of “peace through strength” and attempts to secure “a conventional victory over the world’s largest nuclear power” risk dangerously escalating the conflict, including toward a nuclear confrontation, BTA reported.

Radev reminded that Bulgaria had so far provided political, humanitarian, diplomatic and military support to Ukraine, but cautioned that Sofia should carefully assess any future financial or military commitments in the current security environment.

“Bulgaria has an interest in ensuring that our government first guarantees the standard of living and the security of Bulgarian citizens. Only then can we think about allocating money for this purpose,” he said.
