On the eighth Sunday after the Resurrection of Christ, Orthodox Christians celebrate Pentecost – one of the most important feasts in the Christian calendar. According to the Gospel tradition, this is the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles as they prayed together with the Virgin Mary in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. It was the same place where Jesus Christ had shared the Last Supper with His disciples before His crucifixion.

Christian tradition tells that during the молитва a mighty sound was heard and tongues of fire appeared above the heads of the apostles. Filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, they began speaking in different languages so that people from many lands could understand the message of Christ. Witnesses to the miracle were deeply moved, and thousands accepted baptism that very day. From that moment, the apostles began their mission of spreading Christianity throughout the world.

In Orthodox tradition, Pentecost is also connected with prayers for departed loved ones. During the festive liturgy, worshippers pray for the souls of deceased relatives and friends. At the end of the service, walnut leaves are scattered from the altar over the congregation, symbolising the fiery tongues that appeared above the apostles. Many believers take the leaves home as a sign of blessing and spiritual protection.
