A total of 37% of Bulgarians expect the country to be a better place to live in 20 years, according to a survey by polling agency Trend presented at the Green Transition Forum. At the same time, 52% of respondents said Bulgaria is currently stagnating, while 28% believe it is in decline. Only 14% said the country is moving towards progress and modernisation. The survey found that 30% expect Bulgaria to remain broadly unchanged over the next two decades, while 17% predict a deterioration.
When asked which areas of life in Bulgaria were most likely to improve over the next 20 years, the economy and incomes were the most popular response (39%). Technology and digitalisation followed with 24%, ahead of civil rights and democracy with 21%. Education, science, infrastructure and transport were also among the areas where survey participants expected to see progress.
Demographic decline remains the biggest concern, with half of those surveyed expecting deterioration or stagnation. Respondents also expressed pessimism regarding corruption and governance (36%) and social inequality (30%).
The face-to-face survey was conducted among 1,002 adults between 11 and 17 February at the request of the Green Transition Forum.
