No design or construction procedure has been initiated and there is no progress on the implementation of the NATO base project in the Bezmer area near Yambol, Minister of Defence Dimitar Stoyanov said in a written reply to a question from MP Ivaylo Mirchev of “Democratic Bulgaria” regarding the deployment of a NATO multinational battlegroup in the Kabyle military region, BGNES reported.

Although on 29 January 2026 the parliament ratified an agreement between the governments of Bulgaria and Italy on defence cooperation and the joint construction and use of military facilities in the Kabyle military area, there is a discrepancy between the plan for temporary facilities prepared by the Italian side and the design requirements for the camp. A technical working meeting on the project is therefore expected to take place, said Minister Stoyanov.
