Two scientists from the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute have travelled to Longyearbyen, the administrative centre of Norway's Svalbard archipelago, to take part in the inaugural Summer Polar Programme organised by the Norwegian Polar Institute, BTA reported, citing the institute. Dr Kremena Georgieva and Dr Tsvetan Parov were selected after competing with polar researchers from around the world.
"The participation of two Bulgarian scientists alongside colleagues from the Norwegian Polar Institute is a success for our entire polar research community. I believe it could mark the beginning of an active phase in efforts to organise reciprocal scientific exchanges, both involving Norwegian researchers visiting our Antarctic base and Bulgarian scientists working at their Arctic stations," said Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, head of Bulgaria's Antarctic expeditions.
As part of the programme, the two researchers will take part in field studies of glaciers in the Svalbard region and undergo training in Arctic field safety.
