The statement by the Minister of Defence that Bulgaria will no longer provide military assistance to Ukraine raises questions about the predictability of Bulgaria’s foreign policy, confidence in Bulgaria as an ally, and the protection of the country’s national interests.
Bulgaria will no longer provide weapons to Ukraine
This was stated in a position paper issued by the GERB–SDS parliamentary group, according to BTA. "The Constitution is clear. A minister cannot, through a public statement, alter or invalidate a decision adopted by Parliament," the document states.
In a statement to the media, Democratic Bulgaria party described the refusal to provide assistance to Kyiv as "a strategic mistake that directly affects Bulgaria’s security." "Military aid to Ukraine is not charity. It is an investment in ensuring that Putin is stopped as far away from the borders of the European Union as possible," the coalition added.
Nikolay Denkov, chairman of the parliamentary group of "We Continue the Change", announced that he had submitted a question to Prime Minister Rumen Radev seeking clarification of the Bulgarian government’s exact position regarding assistance to Ukraine. "If Bulgaria were attacked by an aggressor, should we surrender immediately in order to achieve a ‘just and lasting peace’?" Denkov also asked.
