President
Iliana Iotova called for the return of Europe’s leadership
positions by building greater independence in the areas of security,
economy and technology. In an interview with bTV, she said that the
wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have revealed serious weaknesses
in European responses and defence. She supported the idea of
strengthening the European defence capacity, but as a pillar
within NATO, not as an alternative to it.
The
President rejected comparisons of Bulgarian policy with the Hungarian
model, but added that the EU is not a “classroom” in which
countries blindly follow foreign lessons.
Iotova
firmly supported the Prime Minister’s arguments against the
possible inclusion of Russian Patriarch Kirill in the EU sanctions
lists.
According
to the President, Bulgaria holds a “golden card” as a member of
the EU as one of the reasons is its geopolitical position. For many
years, the country was a periphery and major projects bypassed us but
one day, all possible corridors will pass through here, Iotova said.
