A two-humped camel calf has been born at Burgas Zoo for the first time. The female calf, born to the proud parents Kali and Freddy, has an unusual white coat— an uncommon coloration for Bactrian camels. According to a Facebook post by the zoo, the young camel is thriving, confidently exploring her surroundings and staying close to her mother as she learns essential behaviors.
Bactrian camels are an endangered species, and the birth of the white camel calf has drawn attention from both experts and visitors. The newborn has yet to be given a name, but many visitors are already keen to see her.
Calves of this species are born after a gestation period of about 13 months. Within just a few hours of birth, they are able to stand up and follow their mothers. During the first months of life, they feed primarily on their mother's milk, which provides the nutrients needed for healthy growth and development.
