The protection of the rights of Bulgarian citizens abroad as one of the leading foreign policy priorities of Bulgaria was a topic of the meeting of Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova with the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Michael O'Flaherty, who is visiting Bulgaria. "Particular attention is paid to cases of discrimination, intolerance and hate speech," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out.

Minister Petrova emphasized the need to discuss countering these manifestations at the European level in order to guarantee the fundamental rights of citizens in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights. "Bulgaria remains consistently committed to the principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law," she stated.

A focus of Michael O'Flaherty's visit is the situation of elderly people in residential care homes. Velislava Petrova presented the government's intention to significantly improve the care system for the elderly.
