The upcoming feature-length animated film Light Boxes by Bulgarian animator and film director Theodore Ushev has been selected to participate in the Venice Gap-Financing Market 2026, which is part of the Venice Production Bridge and is held within the framework of the 83rd edition of the Venice International Film Festival.
This was announced by Theodore Ushev in a post on his Facebook profile.
“With great joy I share that my upcoming feature-length animated film Light Boxes has been selected for the Venice Gap-Financing Market 2026,” the director writes. According to him, only two animated films are included in this year’s selection.
Ushev notes that the film is a Bulgarian co-production supported by the National Film Center in partnership with Canada, Poland, France, and Belgium. Light Boxes is inspired by the novel of the same name by American writer Shane Jones. The author describes it as “a poetic, visually bold story about war, love, imagination, and resistance against darkness.”
The screenplay was written by Theodore Ushev and edited by Chris Robinson. The film combines puppet animation and live-action elements.
