Eliza Stefanova becomes Sofia University's first female rector

Prof. Dr Eliza Stefanova has been elected rector of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, becoming the first woman to lead Bulgaria's oldest university.

The university's General Assembly elected Stefanova in a run-off vote against Prof. Dr Georgi Raynovski. A professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, she will serve the remainder of the current rector's term until November 2027.

The extraordinary election followed the appointment of former rector Prof. Dr Georgi Valchev as Bulgaria's Minister of Education and Science. Stefanova also serves as chair of the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency.
