Bulgarian food safety inspectors blocked 56 consignments of food and animal feed weighing more than 230 tonnes from entering the country in June after veterinary and phytosanitary checks at border inspection posts, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said.
The rejected shipments, imported from non-EU countries, included beef that failed identity checks, fruit and vegetables with irregular health certificates, and non-animal products such as matcha tea powder containing excessive pesticide residues. Shipments of dried figs, pistachios and cumin were also rejected because of contamination.
The agency submitted 47 notifications to the European Commission's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) following the inspections.
The checks were carried out under the EU's border control procedures for food and feed imports from non-EU countries.
