Bulgarian interior minister heads to U.S. on Rubio invitation

Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev has left for a working visit to the United States at the invitation of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Interior Ministry said. He will attend a ministerial conference on the resurgence of political terrorism hosted by the U.S. Department of State.

During the visit, Demerdzhiev is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation in combating cross-border crime, money laundering and corruption.

Demerdzhiev said he would brief the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on how Bulgarians sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act evade its restrictions, the Interior Ministry said.
