U.S. says it stands ready to counter threats to Bulgaria

The U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) said it is working closely with the Bulgarian government to counter any potential threats.

"The United States has regional defence capabilities on NATO's eastern flank, including in Bulgaria, and we are working closely with the Bulgarian government, as well as our allies and partners across the wider region, to remain vigilant against – and counter – any potential threats," USEUCOM said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

Meanwhile, residents of the village of Bezmer near Yambol and neighbouring villages have begun collecting signatures against the stationing of U.S. aerial refuelling aircraft at the nearby air base, Mayor Rosen Rusev told BTA. He said local people wanted to express their opposition and were prepared to stage protests if necessary.
