The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) has unanimously backed Iliana Iotova's candidacy for president, party leader Krum Zarkov said after a meeting of the party's Executive Bureau.

"Iliana Iotova has never betrayed BSP, and BSP will not betray her. We have no doubt that, if elected, Iliana Iotova will provide the necessary balance while not seeking confrontation for its own sake," the party said.

The socialists cited Iotova's international experience and commitment to social issues as key reasons for backing her candidacy.

On the evening of July 24, Iotova announced that she would run in the presidential election due to be held in late autumn. She told Bulgarian National Television (BNT) that her candidacy would be nominated by an initiative committee, but did not name her running mate for vice president.
