Poorly installed crash barriers, deteriorating road infrastructure and dangerous driving remain among the main causes of serious road accidents in Bulgaria, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said.
The government is considering legislative changes, including banning heavy goods vehicles from using the left lane on motorways, which Demerdzhiev described as a major safety concern. It is also looking at making greater use of toll cameras to detect dangerous driving.
Demerdzhiev said the ministry's priority was preventing accidents rather than imposing penalties.
"For every location we have identified as a dangerous road section, whether because of a high number of serious traffic accidents or illegal street racing, we have put in place specific safety measures," he was quoted as saying by the Interior Ministry.
