Mammoth remains found in Danube near Ryahovo

Low water levels on the Danube have revealed what are believed to be mammoth remains near the village of Ryahovo in northeastern Bulgaria, Bulgarian National Radio correspondent Asya Pencheva reported.

Experts from the Ecomuseum with Aquarium in Ruse will recover the bones for analysis.

The discovery was reported by a local resident, who spotted the remains of a large proboscidean in the riverbed. According to Prof. Nikolay Nenov, director of the Regional Museum of History in Ruse, the find includes a lower jaw, two tusks and possibly a rib. "Scientists who surveyed the site in previous years believed there could be remains there. The area is now part of the Danube, but thousands of years ago it was probably a marsh," Nenov said.

The Ecomuseum with Aquarium in Ruse houses remains of three mammoth species that once inhabited the region.
