European Commission to review Bulgaria's excessive deficit procedure in November

The European Commission will review Bulgaria's excessive deficit procedure in November as part of its autumn economic forecast, a Commission spokesperson said on Wednesday after being asked about the country's 2026 budget.

"We are monitoring the situation very closely and note that, if the current trend continues, we can expect higher growth in net expenditure than previously agreed," the spokesperson said.

Last month, the Commission recommended opening an excessive deficit procedure against Bulgaria, a move subsequently approved by the Council of the European Union.

Bulgaria's parliament approved the 2026 budget on July 24, setting a deficit target of 5.7% of gross domestic product. President Iliana Iotova promulgated the law on Tuesday.
