Atanasovsko Lake celebrates its 46th birthday with a bike tour

On August 12, Atanasovsko Lake will celebrate its 46th birthday. On this date in 1980, the northern part of the lake was designated a managed reserve—an important step toward protecting one of Bulgaria’s most valuable wetlands.

Today, Atanasovsko Lake is an example of the successful coexistence between nature and man. Its northern part is a managed reserve, while the southern part is a protected area. In addition to being a haven for hundreds of bird species, the lake is a place for traditional salt production, environmentally-friendly tourism, sports, education and encounters with nature.

This year, the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water – Burgas are organizing a cycling tour to celebrate the occasion. The tour will take participants through some of the city’s iconic locations and to Atanasovsko Lake.

The route starts at 5:00 p.m. from the Burgas Lighthouse at the Sea Station, passes by Georgi Duhtev’s House in the Sea Garden, and reaches the Bird Hide Viewpoint, Burgas Municipality announced.

A second meeting point for cyclists joining later will be set up at 5:30 p.m. in front of Duhtev’s House in the Sea Garden.

The programme will also feature birdwatching at the hide, as well as walks and games along the Avocet Trail.
