Reconstruction of the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing on the Bulgarian-Turkish border began on Monday, August 10. The project aims to increase the crossing’s capacity by 25%, upgrade its infrastructure, modernize and expand the lanes for processing passenger cars and heavy goods vehicles, and enable reversible traffic flow, the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Edirne said on its website.
The construction and renovation works are expected to be completed within 11 months. The reconstruction will be carried out in stages to ensure the optimal operation of the border crossing.
Given the usual seasonal fluctuations in heavy truck traffic, a gradual increase in traffic is expected from mid-September 2026. This could lead to a buildup of trucks, delays in cargo processing and queues in both directions— out of Bulgaria and into the country.
