Bulgaria has emerged as one of the world’s leading markets for battery energy storage. It ranks ahead of countries with long-standing solar power traditions, such as Chile and Australia, according to an analysis by energy think tank Ember.
In 2025 alone, Bulgaria added around 3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new battery storage capacity, up from virtually none the previous year. By May 2026, installed capacity had more than doubled to 8.6 GWh. According to Ember, the growth has been supported by government funding and fast permitting, with further growth expected by 2030.
About 60% of the batteries’ daily output goes toward domestic consumption, with the rest exported, mainly to Romania and Greece, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported.
The combination of solar power and batteries now meets 24% of the country’s electricity demand between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m and averaged 10% of demand between 7 pm and 7 am.
