For the first time in Bulgaria, a combined liver and kidney transplant has been performed at the Military Medical Academy in Sofia, the hospital announced. The recipient is a 20-year-old man who had suffered from congenital liver and kidney disorders.

The transplant was made possible by the generous decision of the family of a 20-year-old donor, the Executive Agency “Medical Supervision” reported. The organ donation took place at St. George University Hospital in Plovdiv, where brain death was diagnosed in a 20-year-old man, according to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

The first transplant procedure lasted about five hours, while the second took approximately four hours. The patient is currently in satisfactory condition, conscious, responsive, and in stable mental condition, the hospital added.
