Nearly a quarter of a century after their major hit “Dve Sledi Napred” (“Two Traces Ahead”), Bulgarian rock band D2 have recorded a new song with popular television host Deyan Slavchev aka Deo. The song, “Svoboda” (“Freedom”), brings the musicians together once again.
According to Dimitar Karnev, who wrote the music and arrangement and co-wrote the lyrics with Aleksandar Obretenov and Deo, their paths had never really drifted that far apart; friendship and summer brought them together again.
The band’s frontman, Dicho Hristov, adds: “The only thing that has changed is that we’ve grown older and wiser; otherwise, nothing has changed.”

The idea for the song actually dates back to the summer of 2014, when Mitko Karnev was cycling through the Rhodope Mountains. The title “Svoboda” (freedom) was suggested by D2 bassist Aleksandar Obretenov.
Freedom is a particularly important concept for the band, as Dicho explained in an interview with the Bulgarian National Radio:
“The word ‘freedom’ is one of the most serious and powerful words in our vocabulary. We really are freer from a musical point of view, and our thinking is much more liberated because we have gone through that period. As musicians and as a production, D2 have stood the test of time, so now, when we make music, everything is much freer.”
Dimitar Karnev agrees:

“It’s the same for me. As people, we really are around 50 years old, although musicians age in very different ways, and I’m glad we’re among those who do - it simply makes us more relaxed.”
“Svoboda” will be performed live during D2’s national tour, which kicks off at the Summer Theatre in Burgas on August 15, followed by concerts in Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Varna, and Sofia.
In October and November, the musicians will embark on a major European tour, where they are eagerly anticipating emotional encounters with members of the Bulgarian diaspora.
Next year, the band is also set to release an entirely new album, which is already nearly complete.
