Fires near the Serbian capital, Belgrade, are causing smoke to spread across Sofia and several other municipalities in western Bulgaria, Chief Commissioner Aleksandar Dzhartov, director of the Directorate General Fire Safety and Civil Protection, told BNR reporter Nikolay Hristov.

The municipal administration of Kostinbrod also reported heavy smoke in the area and urged residents to keep their windows and doors closed. The smoke cloud was carried over the Sofia Valley by the wind. So far, there are no reports of active fires near Bulgaria’s border, and there is no immediate danger to the population. The Directorate General Fire Safety and Civil Protection said it is monitoring the situation.
