New museum exhibition in Lovech draws strong interest

Lovech’s rich history is attracting an increasing number of young visitors thanks to the new permanent exhibition at the city’s Regional History Museum. Opened at the beginning of July, it has already become the museum’s second most visited attraction, with particularly strong interest among students, families, and local residents, said Silvia Vuteva, curator and ethnographer at the Regional History Museum-Lovech, during a special press conference.

Located along the Osam River in northern Bulgaria, the city holds an important place in Bulgarian history. During the 19th century, Lovech was a major center of trade and craftsmanship and was associated with the activities of Vasil Levski, who established one of the most important centers of the Internal Revolutionary Organization here in the period before Bulgaria’s Liberation in 1878.

The Regional History Museum’s newest exhibition is spread across seven themed halls and traces the development of Lovech and the surrounding region from antiquity to the present day. Among the nearly 5,000 exhibits on display are archaeological finds, everyday objects, documents and materials related to the city’s cultural, spiritual and economic life.

The history is presented through digital technologies, multimedia and educational materials. Some of the halls also feature reconstructions, including a Neolithic dwelling, a military trench, and the interior of a home from Bulgaria’s socialist period.

Visitors spend an average of between one and one and a half hours exploring the exhibition. Since the beginning of August, it has welcomed 17 groups, including 43 university students.

One of the exhibition’s main objectives is to present local history in the context of the nation’s broader history and to show how the past has shaped the identity of Lovech and its residents.
