Meteorite weighing more than 1 kilogram discovered near Montana

A meteorite weighing more than one kilogram has been discovered in Bulgaria’s Montana region. The remarkable find was made by a local enthusiast using a metal detector at a depth of around 65 centimeters, in the roots of a tree in the Balkan Mountains, BNR Radio Vidin correspondent Teodora Yordanova reported.

Initial analyses indicate a high nickel content, one of the key indicators of extraterrestrial origin. The find will undergo detailed laboratory testing and certification before being submitted for inclusion in the official meteorite bulletins of the Global Meteorite Association. A small sample will be sent to a French scientist for further laboratory analysis.

“If the process is successfully completed, this will be only the second officially registered Bulgarian meteorite since the establishment of the Bulgarian Gold Nugget and Meteorite Hunting Association, following the Orlov Dol meteorite”, said Kiril Stamenov of the organization.
