“Nina Roza” starring Bulgarian actor Galin Stoev is Canada’s Oscar submission

The film “Nina Roza”, starring Bulgarian director and actor Galin Stoev, has been selected to represent Canada in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards in 2027, The Hollywood Reporter and Screen Daily report. The film is directed and written by Canadian filmmaker Geneviève Dulude-De Celles.

The drama, which won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, is a co-production between Canada, Italy, Belgium and Bulgaria. Bulgarian producers are Nikolay Mutafchiev and Lyubomira Piperova.

“We tried to make a nuanced film that leaves room for poetry and reflection and speaks about the long-term cost of migration, as well as heritage and identity. I hope the film’s journey, especially in the current context, will continue to enrich our conversations around these delicate issues,” says Geneviève Dulude-De Celles.

Alongside Galin Stoev, the film features a number of other Bulgarian actors, including Michel Tsonchev, Sofia Stanina, Ekaterina Stanina, Svetlana Yancheva, Elena Atanasova, Tsvetan Todorov, Emil Kotev, Maria-Radena Bozhkova, Stefania Kocheva, Dimitar Nikolov, Antonio Dimitrievski, Anastasia Koleva, Mart Lachev and Eva Shuminovska.

The story centres on Mihail, a Bulgarian immigrant who, after returning to Bulgaria from Canada, is forced to confront a past he had sought to forget, BTA recalls.

Mihail is played by Galin Stoev, a director, actor and former director of the National Theatre in Toulouse.

The 99th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 14, 2027, in Los Angeles.

“Nina Roza” will open the Golden Rose Film Festival in Varna on September 17, followed by a nationwide cinema release on October 9, the Bulgarian National Film Centre announced.
