European Council President António Costa will visit Sofia on Thursday, September 3, for talks with Prime Minister Rumen Radev, the European Council said. The visit is part of Costa’s tour of EU member state capitals. He will also visit Romania and Greece on the same day, BNR’s Brussels correspondent Angelina Piskova reported.

Costa is holding talks with EU leaders on the bloc’s next budget, including national contributions and the EU’s own resources. In the budget negotiations, member states are informally divided between the so-called “frugals”, which favour more restrained spending, and the “friends of cohesion”, including Bulgaria, which are pushing for sufficient funding to reduce regional disparities across the EU.

The talks also cover preparations for the next meeting of EU leaders in October.
