Danube levels rise, but restrictions on shipping remain

Water levels on the Danube have risen over the past 24 hours along the entire Bulgarian stretch of the river, the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube said.

The largest increase was recorded at Ruse, where the river rose by seven centimetres. Levels were up six centimetres at Svishtov, four at Oryahovo, Nikopol and Lom, and two at Novo Selo, Vidin and Silistra. No vessels have run aground either within or outside the navigation channel over the past 24 hours, according to the River Supervision Directorate in Ruse.

Despite the rise, all restrictions on vessel draught remain in force along the Bulgarian stretch of the Danube. At Ruse, the river stood at 120 centimetres below the local reference level today.

The water level there is forecast to rise by another five centimetres over the next two days.
