Grigor Dimitrov was eliminated in the first round of the US Open in New York, losing to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in four sets, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 4-6. The match lasted more than two and a half hours.
The match was delayed by rain but began well for Dimitrov, who took the first set after breaking serve in the sixth game. In the fourth set, Popyrin took a 5-1 lead. Dimitrov managed to close the gap to 5-4, but was unable to turn the match around.
With three consecutive wins in qualifying and an appearance in the first round of the US Open, Dimitrov is expected to move up to around 130th in the world rankings after the tournament. He is currently 137th.
