“The security of Bulgaria’s borders and the measures Bulgaria is implementing can serve as a model for the entire European Union”, Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev said during a meeting with Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens, the Ministry of Interior reported. The two agreed that the European Border and Coast Guard Agency should support member states even more actively in the fight against illegal migration and new security threats.

According Minister Demerdzhiev, it is necessary to achieve a uniform standard of security at the external borders that works for the benefit of the EU. He said that the Union must be prepared to respond to new security challenges, including countering threats arising from the incursion of unmanned aerial vehicles.

“For Bulgaria, the partnership with Frontex is of key importance. As a country located on a key external border of the EU, we are protecting not only our national border, but also the security of the entire Schengen area”, Ivan Demerdzhiev said.

As part of the joint operation “Bulgaria 2026,” 160 Frontex officers have been deployed along Bulgaria’s external borders.
