The Freedom Monument on Shipka Peak is closing to visitors from today ahead of planned conservation and restoration work. The project is expected to continue until 2029.
Because of the harsh weather conditions at the Shipka Pass, work will be carried out from April until the end of October over three consecutive years, BNR Stara Zagora reported.
The museum management noted that the closure will coincide with the 150th anniversaries of the Shipka battles in 2027 and Bulgaria’s Liberation in 2028. However, halting the procedures already under way would delay the restoration and could put the condition of the monument at risk.
