A new branch of adapted sport has been launched in Bulgaria, with boxing training for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The initiative is a joint project of the Bulgarian Boxing Federation and the Adapted Physical Activity – Bulgaria Federation.
The first training session has already taken place, with regular training planned to develop strength, coordination, concentration, discipline and confidence.
Later this month, athletes with Down syndrome will take part in demonstration bouts during the European Boxing Championships for men and women in Sofia. Bulgaria will host the championships from September 15 to 26 at Asics Arena.
“This is an opportunity to show that sport can push boundaries, create new opportunities and give everyone who wants to fight, develop and dream a place in the ring,” the organisers said.
