GERB will decide by September 8 whether to nominate its own presidential candidate or support another candidate, party leader Boyko Borissov said at a youth forum in the village of Arbanasi. He explained that the party considers the upcoming 2027 local elections more important, BNR correspondent Zdravka Maslyankova reported.
Boyko Borissov himself opposes GERB taking part in the presidential election. He acknowledged that there has been intense discussion in the party’s internal chats over whether GERB should put forward its own candidate.
He said presidential elections differ from local elections because they determine who will serve as the unifier of the nation and supreme commander-in-chief — a role that is particularly important amid wars and international instability. According to Borissov, none of the candidates announced so far fully fits this profile.
