The European Commission has approved the pilot project “Summers of Europe”, an initiative of Bulgarian MEP Hristo Petrov for international summer educational camps for children living in poverty. The project envisages the creation of a European network of free summer camps for vulnerable children. The aim is to give them access to sports, culture, education, creative activities, and opportunities to interact with peers from other EU member states, BTA reported.

The initiative is part of efforts to ensure equal access for vulnerable children to extracurricular activities, including sports, culture and leisure. The project has a proposed budget of EUR 1.45 million.

“This is a success for me, but much more than that, it is a success for our country, because we are showing that Bulgaria can put an important social issue on the European agenda and turn it into a real instrument”, MEP Hristo Petrov said.
