The Interior Ministry will take full responsibility for road safety enforcement as part of government measures to tackle traffic violations. At present, enforcement is divided between three institutions – the Interior Ministry, the Road Transport Administration and the National Toll Administration, Radio Bulgaria’s Nikolay Hristov reported.

The Toll Administration is to cease operating in its current form. Its enforcement functions will be transferred to the Interior Ministry, while data collection and analysis will move to the Ministry of Transport.

Random roadside checks will be replaced by checks based on risk profiles and criteria. During their first two years after obtaining a licence, young drivers will also undergo additional training at specialised driving facilities, including practice in handling aquaplaning. Traffic police officers will have access to data from toll cameras on their tablets, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said.

The reform is due to be completed by the end of 2027.
