The city and its absurdities through the lens of photographer Ulrich Wüst

Goethe-Institut Bulgaria and Sofia City Art Gallery are turning the spotlight on contemporary German photography with the work of Ulrich Wüst. The exhibition Wanderings through History. The Photographs of Ulrich Wüst, opening today at 6 pm and running until November 22, features more than 120 archival photographs, mostly black-and-white pigment prints.

Wüst’s professional background in urban planning and photo editing has shaped his distinctive approach to photography – analytical, precise and rigorously composed.

Born in Magdeburg in 1949, Ulrich Wüst began attracting attention in the 1980s, particularly for his numerous urban landscapes photographed in East Germany. The images often capture the seemingly unstoppable decay of historic architecture. Wüst is drawn to the absurdities of the urban environment – the result of neglect and ignorance, but also of senseless demolition and uncontrolled development.
