The government is working with the European Commission to avoid losing funding due to compromised projects, Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev said during a hearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Communications, BGNES reported.
Minister Peev said that railway construction is the most expensive, and EU funds must therefore be used appropriately in this sector. Georgi Peev identified the Elin Pelin–Kostenets railway tunnel as a compromised project. He stressed that the government is actively working with the EU to avoid losing funding needed to complete the tunnel.
The minister described vertical transport connectivity as a major deficit for Bulgaria. “At present, we are focused on completing the Struma motorway near Kresna. The other priority is the bridges over the Danube. We are holding intensive talks with the European Commissioner for Transport, who has promised to visit Bulgaria. Once Romania has a stable government, we will begin negotiations on two more bridges”, Minister Peev said.
