Six customs officers and three civilians have been detained at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing on Bulgaria’s border with Türkiye, BTA reported. The customs officers were detained while on duty. They are suspected of allowing smuggled goods to bypass customs checks.
According to sources familiar with the operation, the arrests followed a period in which the officers had been placed under surveillance and their communications wiretapped.
The operation was carried out jointly by the General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and the Customs Agency.
